MC School Library
MC School is a private, international English-immersion school in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic which serves about 500 students from preschool through grade 12. The small library had been neglected for some time when I arrived.
The first task was reorganizing and revitalizing the library space, which had become more a storage space than a school library. In the process of cleaning, we found boxes of out-of-date text books, dusty old VHS tapes, a 1980s Members Only jacket, a box of old Christmas decorations, and no fewer than three old typewriters. Next we had to start automating the library system. Follett cataloged 5,390 library items. To date, I have cataloged over 2,000 additional items, many of which were uncovered during the organization process. I have also introduced weekly library classes for students in preschool through fifth grade, and worked with middle and high school teachers to embed information literacy skills into existing projects. |
